[...] Looking back, I had my lean book-buying revelation more than a year ago. As I said at the time, “right now, I have … lots of books to read before I can start buying again”, and while I have hardly sworn off from buying books since then, I have made an effort to read down my stack of unread books.
[...] This works great if all steps take the same time, but sometimes different steps take diferent times. In those situations, you can add buckets as necessary. Or, I suppose, remove buckets - for example, when buying books, Amazon normally ships books to me a little faster than I want to buy them, so while I normally use one bucket, I don’t always worry about keeping the bucket full.
[...] A month and a half ago, I was toying with the idea that maybe signing up for Amazon prime would actually save me money. I still don’t really believe that, but the general idea of not buying books until right before I’m going to actually read them seems sound to me. I’m going on a trip soon, and will want a car adapter for my iPod; that seemed as good an excuse as any to sign up for the service. It comes free for the first three months; we’ll see how I like it. [...]

I made a math error above - the house cost about 300 dollars a square foot, not 30. I'm still not sure exactly how many square feet to assign to a bookshelf, but it looks like the costs of housing a book are comparable to the costs of buying that book. That certainly changes the calculations, and suggests that I should be more aggressive about not buying books and about giving away books that I don't plan to reread.

Of course, it's not like our mortgage will go down if I stop buying books. But it would be unfortunate if the presence of books made us feel that the house was too small.
