I had to help a friend with a similar problem. Her connection had been down, for some unknown reason she had decided that her router was to blame and she had plugged her laptop directly into the modem. She reset the modem, found that her laptop worked but the router didn't and felt that her theory had been confirmed.

She then proceeded to purchase a new router that she couldn't get to work either. Then she called me.

I have to admit that I was puzzled. I brought my own laptop and found that it wouldn't connect either. Only her laptop could get an address. In the end I called comcast and the CSR took 20 seconds to explain that the modem will only communicate with the first client that connects. If you plug in a new device you have to reset the modem. Some days I am happy that I got my own modem instead of renting one, my linksys doesn't display this behavior.

So, maybe you got a n00b CSR? Maybe your explanation was confused enough that he/she didn't pick up on the problem? Judging from the help I got, it is a pretty common problem and I got the answer almost immediately.
