I love Rock Band for every reason you discussed here. In particular you are on point about the intimate connection you build with the music when you progress to the tougher difficulties. I really love music and I can appreciate any tool that can bring me closer to it. But Guitar Hero is starting to scare me a bit, because it seems like their focus has shifted towards increasing the difficulty, in some cases, at the expense of the music emulating accuracy.

Also, I find myself in a similar predicament in Rock Band. It took me several months and the second-fret-button-set epiphany to beat Flirtin' with Disaster. Unfortunately, I still have 3 songs left (Green Grass, Highway Star, & ?) and the constant failures and inability to use the practice mode effectively caused me to change instruments and see how far I can get.

The drums were amazingly fun and disturbingly accurate on harder difficulties. It just seems like the drums aren't as responsive as they could be (hopefully better with RB2 drums). I managed to get about halfway through Hard and my pedal exploded into 1000 little pieces. I almost have no choice but to move on to Rock Band 2...
