Travis: Glad I'm not the only one who didn't notice how the map works at first...

Dan: I do wonder how exclusively it's a real gamer's game. Don't get me wrong, it's clearly steeped in vast amounts of video game experience and love, but I wonder how well the aesthetic would work for people who don't play video games but enjoy a range of experiences in other media? I really don't have a good guess either way. (Ditto for Killer 7.)

John: good idea. Alas, I just did a video search, and the accent didn't come through in its full glory on the ones I browsed through. :-( I'll keep my ears open...

I'm glad to see that you gave NMH a shot! Your experience sounds very much like mine -- I expected to be turned off by many of the game's facets (the coy self-awareness, the repetition, the gratuitous violence) but was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed them. It's a real gamer's game, isn't it? I think NMH has grasped something about the medium that I haven't quite figured out yet.

If you record a bit of that intriguing accent and post it, some of us readers may be able to identify it.

There is a slightly different ending if you buy the last sword. Of course I didn't buy it because I wasn't interested in earning more money just to have a new sword for the last boss. I should have trusted that there was some sort of payoff for the extra effort.

I didn't bother going after the Lovikov balls at all, and wasn't aware that there was anything on the map indicating where they were. I'll have to remember that when I play again.

From what I read, the explanations of the ending seemed like they were reaching a little bit. Since I read them before playing the actual game, however, I may have been setting myself up.
