The quickest way to pause a song is to pull out the headphones -- the song will immediately pause.

Man, I hate Cover Flow. It's true that the "normal" iTunes and iPod interfaces are about as exciting as Excel spreadsheets, but they work. (I'm a guy who likes to hand-pick tracks one at a time, too.) The only time I use Cover Flow is when I want to listen to an album whose name I can't remember.

That said, you're absolutely right that I got the wrong iPod. :-)

Oh, thanks! Avoiding the slide is certainly an improvement.

I can't say I'm a big fan of cover flow, either; I would probably like it more if I had different usage patterns, but as is I mainly play podcasts and secondarily do shuffle, and cover flow doesn't help with either of those.

You can pause a song without unlocking by double tapping the center button, it'll bring up a small music menu. It's not a ton faster, but it might help.

My biggest problem with the iPod touch? It keeps getting locked in cover flow mode when I take it out of my pocket. I really wish I could disable that.
