@John: Yeah, though of course offsite fits in a different niche than onsite backup: less convenient, but also less vulnerable to losing everything in a house fire. And a lot more expensive, though I imagine that prices will go down - e.g. JungleDisk charges $900/year for the half terabyte of storage that's in my Time Capsule. (And Comcast would probably have a bit of a fit if I tried to save/restore that much over the network.)

@Paul: I have been underwhelmed by certain aspects of the PS3, but all in all I'm happy with it, and we're certainly keeping it.

The entire post I was waiting for the blame to lay a the feet of Sony. That's just what I'm use to, apparently.

I'd need an AirPort Extreme for my main station, not an express. (Assuming I went with Apple products.) The Extreme costs $179, the 500GB Time Capsule costs $299; that's too much for a 500GB drive, but not enough for me to really worry, given the convenience factor. (The 1TB Time Capsule costs $499, which is ridiculous.)

I also seem to recall working that Time Machine won't work with a regular USB drive mounted over a wireless network, but I could be wrong about that.

Is Time Capsule really cost-effective compared to a good external HD and an Air Port Express?
