(Yes, I know that none of my readers care about this. Sorry.)
Two recent news items:
- In the last week of August, the top 10 bestselling games in Japan were all for the DS. I can’t remember ever seeing the top 10 bestsellers all being for a single system.
- Sony now says that they’ll only have 100,000 PS3’s available at launch.
Weird. I’m used to thinking that Sony knows what they’re doing while Nintendo is kind of incompetent; guess not. Who would have thought that the strategy of graphically underpowered consoles with weird control schemes would turn out so well, while the strategy of turning your console into a vehicle for your movie branch’s preferred format would get off on so bad a foot?
Not that this necessarily means anything in the long term – Sony still has solid third party support, and presumably they’ll learn how to make lasers eventually. Plus, Nintendo is still more than capable of screwing up big time. But one more piece of bad news – bad manufacturing quality, defection of a major RPG, or something – and inertia really could shift in Japan.
