I had not realized until listening to the radio today that the Diamondbacks’ best hitter is, in fact a pitcher. Only 60 ABs, but still: a .333 average, .683 slugging, 1.032 OPS isn’t shabby at all. The announcers were saying that he’d gone 4-4 twice this season, once with 2 HRs and the other time with 3 doubles.

It’s too small to be meaningful. If Eddie Gaedel had somehow gotten a hit instead of being walked, he’d have a lifetime average of 1.000.

According to the people at Stat of the Day, Owings had the best hitting season by a pitcher ever. John C. is right that this is too small a sample size to conclude that Owings is not “really” a .750 OPS hitter, but I think it’s big enough to conlude that he is not really a .450 OPS hitter like your usual pitcher.
