I was going through my drawers and ran across some old passports; I thought that people who know what I look like now might find them amusing.
My passport photos from 1981 and 1988:
It’s a good thing that that last passport was only valid for five years, because towards the end of traveling on it, I didn’t look anything like that picture: I had glasses again, long hair, and a beard, though the beard perhaps wasn’t quite as bushy as it is now. For reference, here’s a 2006 picture of me that’s still pretty accurate. (It’s not a passport photo, passports have security measures that mean that they don’t scan well these days.)

What is it about programmers that encourages beard growth? I suspect we require something to stroke while thinking. Either way I’m jealous, mine is rather wimpy.

My reasoning on that matter was pretty simple: I just didn’t enjoy shaving, and didn’t see that it was bringing me any particular benefit. So I stopped, 20 years ago this summer. I am willing to believe that programmers are more willing than the norm to follow that reasoning…

I never noticed until now that the look for which all indie rock men now strive is essentially you in 1988.

Yeah, that 1988 look is actually kind of striking in its own way, isn’t it? (And that’s even without the blue of my eyes really coming through in the photo.) Though I can’t say I felt that way at the time, I was much more taken with my 1989 Jesus look.

I definitely used to look like you did in 1988. I just got to that look in 1985.
